The landscape of electric vehicles and golf carts is rapidly changing, and with the rise in popularity of eco-friendly transportation options, regulations are evolving to ensure the safety and compliance of users. As of October 1st, 2023, Florida has implemented new golf cart laws that directly impact younger drivers.
Details of the New Golf Cart Law
The new legislation, HB 949, introduces a significant change to the operation of golf carts by minors in Florida:
Licensing Requirements: The law now mandates that anyone under the age of 18 must possess a learner’s permit or a driver’s license to operate a golf cart on a public road in Florida.
Previous Regulations: Prior to this change, individuals had to be at least 14 years old to operate golf carts on public roads designated for golf-cart use. Importantly, there was no requirement for these operators to have a driver’s license.
